Yet another seven things

One
Well it's Christmas, the belated celebration of the birthday of our Lord and saviour Jesus H. Christ. This Christmas I was gifted with mostly money and a bottle of Havana Club, So I'm pretty happy with that.

Two
I just finished reading 'Silence of The Grave' the follow up to 'Jar City' (which I loved and the film is well worth watching) by the Icelandic Author Arnaldur Indriðason. In his second outing for Detective Erlendur, Indriðason developed the loose dual narrative method of story telling first used in Jar City to cover the investigation of a mysterious skeleton uncovered in the ever expanding sprawl of the city of Reykjavik. The story covers Iceland's past, domestic abuse, deep seated guilt and broken families. Despite the dark themes the book is a compelling read and you can't help but feel for Indriðason's central character Erlendur as struggles to maintain the investigation whilst dealing with his fractured family. It's not a laugh riot but I really enjoyed it

Three
I know I have just mentioned it but I have my "album" up on Band Camp, I'm just saying.

Four
On the 30th a few friends and I are going to see SONIC YOUTH LIVE(!) at the Manchester Academy.

Five
I hear Natalie Portman's latest film 'Black Swan' is getting some good reviews. I think Portman is a brilliant actress she stars along side Vincent Cassel in psychological horror, a genre which is always a laugh so I'm pretty excited.

Six
I will be djing New Years Eve at the Oakwood this year and one of the tracks I'm thinking of playing is... Gil Scott-Heron - New York Is Killing Me (Jamie xx Remix) by jp917

Seven
'X'ed' by Charles Burns is a brilliant surreal graphic almost like a nightmarish Tin tin, it just has to be read to be believed.

I haven't posted anything since June!?

I didn't see much of a point of posting shit but incase there is anyone out there reading this I'll post something about my new "album" I have it up on bandcamp, Opið (open) is a collection of seven aleatoric pieces I composed during the past year.

Check it out

"Did yer knor I'm part dragun?"

Another trip to Edinburgh this week, I had a ear full of olive oil and mild deafness in one ear that was a fine start.
But my midweek getaway was mostly made up of....
Tennents, Deuchars and Irn bru

Posh brats and yankies in the camera obscurer, The camera obscurer had five floors of weird photos and optical allusions, the roof had a near 360 degree view of the burgh well worth checking out. http://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/
Monster Mash has changed names and the brand has changed hands (seems the name and concept has been half inched) , herb sausage monster mash in the new gaff wasn't the same despite the identical menu something weren't right but I had a belly full of food none the less . Hope the newly christened MUMS still has the same lumpless mash, eh?

At the the Edinburgh museum we went to see the Lewis Chessmen, we little 12th century walrus ivory and whale tooth chess pieces from Scandinavia.

Twas good to be back up there, next time I'm gonna see Henry Rollins at the fringe
fucking exciting!

NOISE?

Back in March I had the pleasure of promoting and engineering a gig for the Edinburgh based band USURPER, it was a low key quiet affair with a sound scape of ambient amplifier hiss punctuated with scrapes and squeals, hardly a foot tapper but for me a welcome change to fidlly fee irish music or twangy indie bollocks.

Ali and Malcy of USURPER gave me a few Cds of their recordings and recordings of a few friends of theirs, my personal favorite was a 2007 live recording they did with Sticky foster.
Check out the second track from the USURPER and STICKY FOSTER choc. 194 cd.
This track consists of clinks, clanks, cello squeals which create a jarring and uneasy sound scape.
